São Francisco do Sul Port – Exports surpass imports

By ecosea00

In the first ten months of 2023, the Port of São Francisco do Sul has already handled 13.8 million tons of goods, 27% more than in the same period last year (10.8 million).

Exports reached 8.4 million tons, representing 61% of cargo, while imports reached 5.4 million tons (39%).

In the same period of 2022, imports, with 5.6 million tons (52%), exceeded exports, with 5.1 million tons (48%).

However, in 2023, driven by the shipment of grains to China, Porto do Norte in Santa Catarina managed to reverse the trend and exports increased 64% compared to the previous year.

The data was released this week by the port authority and shows that it is the first time in two years that exports exceed imports: the last time was in 2021.

For the president of Porto, Cleverton Vieira, the increase in grain exports is directly related to the productive capacity of Santa Catarina and Brazilian agribusiness, which has been standing out for its high productivity, with economic and social gains for the entire production and logistics chain involved.

“To cope with this growth and facilitate the flow of national production, the Port of São Francisco is constantly investing in the maintenance of equipment used to load ships, as well as in improving the condition of the facility’s land and waterway infrastructure”, says the President Cleverton Vieira.

“The results show that the Port of São Francisco do Sul has been taking advantage of market opportunities, despite climate difficulties, seeking efficient solutions, which has been reflected in the numbers and in a positive performance throughout the year”, assesses the acting secretary from the Secretariat of Ports, Airports and Railways (SPAF), Robison Coelho.

36% growth

In October, despite the constant rain that affected port activity, around 1.36 million tons of goods passed through the Port of São Francisco, representing an increase of 36% compared to the same month in 2022 (1 million tons) .

Exports totaled 856 thousand tons (63%), thanks mainly to corn (635 thousand tons) and soybeans (202 thousand tons)

Imports of products reached 511 thousand tons (37%). Highlights include steel products (320 thousand tons) and fertilizers (177 thousand tons).
